On the 20th of November 1971, Klaus Kinski wanted to tell the most exciting story of mankind – the life of Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, he didn’t get that far. The stage show of the scandalous actor, was interrupted by an audience, which hadn’t come to hear a sermon, but rather to take part in a discussion.
Peter Geyer’s documentary JESUS CHRISTUS ERLÖSER, depicts a tumultuous evening: a slanging match, an actor wrestling with his text, a theatre happening in a time critical of authority, and the terrific failure of a literary step which was aimed at world improvement.
Geyer, with the aid of his audio and visual material, gives the audience a very close impression of what really happened that evening. It is likewise an exceptional document of that era and of that remarkable artist.
